Hinge Cover Replacement
Crusty and yellow, the original rear hatch hinge covers needed
replacement. A pair of Type 3 Squareback aftermarket hinge covers
were purchased from vwispwest.com (p/n 361867528A).
They are a close match to the Type 4 parts 461867527-8, but wider
and a bit shorter. However, they are made of ABS, so they can be
remolded with heat to fit.
Tools and Materials:
Drill
Heatgun (or hair drier)
Procedure:
Step 1 - Remove old covers.
Step 2 - Place Type 3 covers using rear screws. Drill holes for front screws and secure with original screws.
Step 3 -- Set heatgun to 380F and slowly warm rear outboard section
near pilar (this section of cover over hangs edge of pilar unless
modified). With material soft, gently push with thumb against
pilar using oven glove. Also heat outboard sides of hinge slot to
reposition for clearance with hinge.
