Exceptional 1973 VW 412 w/4-speed   Price: n/a
I've owned this 412 for only a few months, and am reluctantly selling it for lack of indoor storage space. When I bought it from the daughter of the original owner, I wasn't really in the market for a 412, but this one is so nice I couldn't resist. I have two other yellow '73s (Ghia and Thing), and felt this would make a good partner for them.

Most of the paint is OG in outstanding condition. A few of the exterior panels have been repainted through the years, but they look very nice. My sense is that these repairs were due to minor scrapes, as there is nothing about this car that suggests it ever had any significant damage. There are a few small door dings and a small dent just outboard of the right rear bumper guard. There is no rust anywhere. The overall impression is that the car is straight, original, and wonderful. The interior is also very nice, as seen in the pictures.

Before buying this car, I'd never been in a 412. It is, unquestionably, the most refined air-cooled VW I've driven. Quiet and smooth. I've read that this model, the two-door with a four-speed, is the fastest air-cooled VW ever imported to the US, and I'd believe that from how well it scoots. My only complaint about driveability is the brakes seem a bit spongy, despite having been rebuilt by a local shop (for $700!) a month before I bought it. Other small issues include an intermittent horn, and the auxiliary gas heater doesn't work.

The owner's manual shows dealer stamps for routine service and oil changes through about 67,000 miles. That dealer went out of business at that point, so the owner made personal entries in the manual through 107,000 miles. The odometer now shows a bit over 114,000.

I recently came upon two other cars that I've always wanted (a '69 912 Targa and a Miata, Egad!), and buying them leaves me with too little garage space. That's why the 412 must leave. I hope someone local in The Samba faithful will come look, buy, and enjoy. Thanks for listening.
